국립순천대학교(총장 이병운)는 기초과학연구소(원장 박항수)가 운영 중인 생활과학교실의 2025년 누적 참여인원이 6천명을 돌파했다고 밝혔다.

국립순천대학교 생활과학교실은 과학기술에 대한 관심과 이해도를 높이고, 지역 간 교육격차 해소에 기여하기 위해 운영되고 있다. 지역아동센터, 돌봄센터, 복지시설 등 지역 내 유관기관을 직접 찾아가 체험 중심의 과학교육 프로그램을 무료로 제공하고 있다.

올해 생활과학교실은 ▲다빈치다리 만들기 ▲피라미드 만화경 만들기 ▲ 공중부양 우주선 만들기 ▲ 달의 모양변화 관찰하기 ▲ 자석으로 가는 거북선 만들기 ▲ 수력발전 원리 실험 등 8차시 이상으로 구성된 다양한 과학 체험 프로그램을 운영했다.

생활과학교실은 지역 내 취약계층 및 청소년, 성인, 시니어까지 폭넓은 과학교육을 제공함으로써 평생학습 생태계를 조성하며 지역과 대학이 함께 발전하는 상생의 모델을 이어가고 있으며 다양한 계층에 맞는 맞춤형 프로그램을 지속적으로 개발하여 운영할 예정이다.

프로그램에 참가한 학생은 “매주 새로운 과학실험을 할 수 있어서 무척 재미있고, 선생님이 직접 오셔서 재미있게 설명해주셔서 무척 도움이 되고 매주 기대된다”고 소감을 전했다.

한편, 국립순천대학교 생활과학교실은 과학기술진흥기금 및 복권기금과 순천시, 전남테크노파크의 재원으로 운영되며, 과학기술정보통신부와 한국과학창의재단, 순천시, 국립순천대학교의 지원을 받아 운영되고 있다.

SCNU Community Science Classroom Surpasses 6,000 Participants in 2025

- Expanding science education with the local community, growing into an open space for learning

Sunchon National University (SCNU, President Lee Byung-Woon) announced that its Community Science Classroom, operated by the Basic Science Research Institute (Director Park Hang-Soo), has surpassed 6,000 cumulative participants in 2025.

The SCNU Community Science Classroom aims to enhance public interest and understanding of science and technology while helping to bridge educational gaps between regions. The program offers free, hands-on science education to local community institutions such as childcare centers, after-school programs, and welfare facilities, bringing interactive lessons directly to participants.

This year, the program included more than eight sessions featuring creative activities such as Building a Da Vinci Bridge, Making a Pyramid Kaleidoscope, Creating a Floating Spaceship, Observing the Phases of the Moon, Building a Magnetic Turtle Ship, and Exploring the Principles of Hydropower.

The Community Science Classroom provides inclusive science learning opportunities for children, youth, adults, and seniors alike, fostering a lifelong learning ecosystem that connects the university with the local community. SCNU plans to continue developing and offering customized programs that meet the diverse needs of local participants.

One student shared, “It’s so much fun to do new science experiments every week. The instructor explains everything in an easy and interesting way, and I always look forward to the next class.”

The SCNU Community Science Classroom is funded by the Science and Technology Promotion Fund, the Lottery Fund, Suncheon City, and Jeonnam Technopark, and is supported by the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity (KOFAC), Suncheon City, and SCNU.
