- 공공기관·대학·시민이 참여한 리빙랩 기반 해양환경 개선 활동으로 지속가능한 바다 실천

국립순천대학교(총장 이병운) RISE사업단은 지난 23일(목) 여수광양항만공사, 해양환경공단 여수지사와 함께‘리빙랩 기반 연안정화 프로그램’을 공동 추진하며 지역 해양환경 개선과 시민 참여형 환경보전 문화 확산에 나섰다.

이번 프로그램은 국립순천대 RISE사업의 일환으로, 지역이 주도적으로 참여하는 ‘리빙랩(Living Lab)’ 방식의 환경문제 해결 모델을 현장에 적용해 지속가능한 해양 보전 실천문화를 확산하기 위해 기획됐다.

이날 행사에는 순천대학교 학생, 지역주민, 해양환경공단, 여수광양항만공사 관계자 등 약 50여 명이 참여했다. 참가자들은 해양오염의 원인과 자원순환의 중요성을 배우는 환경교육 세션을 시작으로, 여수 우순도 해변 일대에서 폐플라스틱, 폐어망 등 해양쓰레기를 직접 수거하며 연안정화 활동을 펼쳤다.

산림자원학과 유성찬 학생은 “평소 환경문제에 관심이 없었는데, 직접 현장에서 오염의 심각성을 체감하며 내가 배운 전공 지식을 지역사회에 적용하고 싶다”며 “앞으로도 지역과 함께 환경 개선에 참여하고 싶다”고 소감을 전했다.

이번 활동은 단순한 정화 캠페인에 그치지 않고, 수거된 쓰레기의 재활용 가능성과 지속적인 쓰레기 저감 방안을 함께 논의함으로써 참여자 스스로 해양환경 보전의 필요성을 인식하고, 지역이 함께 고민하는 실천형 학습의 장을 마련했다.

국립순천대 RISE사업단은 이번 프로그램을 시작으로 여수광양항만공사, 해양환경공단등과 협의체를 구성하고 중대재해처벌법과 안전관리 인식 제고를 위한 후속 교육 프로그램도 추진할 예정이다. 이를 통해 환경정화 활동뿐 아니라 안전과 지속가능성을 아우르는 지역사회 실천 플랫폼으로 발전시켜 나갈 계획이다

한편, 오현민 라이즈사업단 시군동반성장 사업부장은 “전남 동부권 라이즈사업 참여대학이 지역 현안을 적극 발굴하고, 문제 해결과 균형발전에 앞장설 수 있도록 교육·연구·산학협력 전반에서 긴밀하게 협력해 나가겠다.”라고 밝혔다.

SCNU RISE Project Team Leads Coastal Cleanup Living Lab for Marine Environment Restoration

? Promoting sustainable ocean practices through a community-driven Living Lab involving public institutions, universities, and citizens

Sunchon National University (SCNU, President Lee Byung-Woon) announced that its RISE Project Team carried out a “Living Lab-Based Coastal Cleanup Program” on October 23 in collaboration with the Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority and the Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation (KOEM) Yeosu Branch, taking the lead in improving the marine environment and fostering a culture of community-led conservation.

The program, part of SCNU’s RISE (Regional Innovation System for Education) initiative, applied a Living Lab model?a participatory approach that involves citizens and institutions in real-world problem-solving?to promote sustainable practices for marine protection and environmental restoration.

Approximately 50 participants, including SCNU students, local residents, and representatives from KOEM and the Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority, joined the event. Following an environmental education session on the causes of marine pollution and the importance of resource circulation, participants collected marine debris such as discarded plastics and fishing nets along Usundo Beach in Yeosu, actively engaging in the coastal cleanup.

Yoo Sung-Chan, a student majoring in Forest Resources, shared, “I hadn’t realized the seriousness of marine pollution until seeing it firsthand. This experience inspired me to apply what I’ve learned in my field of study to help improve our local environment. I want to continue participating in regional environmental initiatives.”

The activity went beyond a one-time cleanup campaign by encouraging participants to discuss waste recycling strategies and long-term reduction measures, cultivating a deeper understanding of marine conservation and creating a hands-on learning platform for collective regional action.

Building on this initiative, the SCNU RISE Project Team plans to form a cooperative council with KOEM and the Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority to develop follow-up educational programs focused on safety awareness and compliance with the Serious Accidents Punishment Act. The goal is to expand the Living Lab into a regional action platform that integrates environmental stewardship, safety management, and sustainability.

Oh Hyun-Min, Head of the RISE Project’s Regional Co-Growth Division, stated, “Through the RISE Project, participating universities in eastern Jeollanam-do will continue identifying key local challenges and actively pursuing solutions. We will strengthen cooperation across education, research, and industry-academia partnerships to drive balanced regional development.”
