- 9월 24일부터 10월 10일까지 교명 공모 … 새로운 비전과 정체성 담는 이름 찾는다

국립순천대학교(총장 이병운)와 국립목포대학교(총장 송하철)가 대학 통합 추진에 따른 통합대학 교명 선정 절차에 본격 돌입했다.

양 대학은 지난해 11월 15일 통합 추진을 공식 합의하고 같은 해 12월말 교육부에 통합 신청서를 제출했다. 이어 올해는 대학특성화 및 거버넌스체계 등 주요 사항을 보완한 수정신청서를 교육부에 제출할 계획이며, 그에 앞서 통합대학의 새로운 정체성과 미래 비전을 담은 교명을 조속히 선정하기로 협의했다.

교명 선정 과정의 첫 단계인 교명 공모는 오는 9월 24일부터 10월 10일까지 17일간 진행된다. 이번 공모는 양 대학 구성원(교직원, 학생)은 물론 전 국민을 대상으로 진행되며, 통합대학의 비전과 가치를 함축하면서 지역 발전을 선도하는 거점 대학으로서의 위상이 반영된 이름을 발굴하는 데 그 목적이 있다.

응모는 대학 구성원의 경우 ‘대학 자체 모바일 플랫폼 시스템’을 통해, 일반 국민은 양 대학 홈페이지에 게시된 공지를 참고하여 ‘온라인 설문조사 플랫폼’을 통해 참여할 수 있다.

아울러 양 대학은 외부 전문가 컨설팅을 병행하여 다양한 의견을 폭넓게 수렴할 예정이며, 제안된 다수의 교명에 대해 양 대학 ‘교명선정위원회’ 심사를 통해 1차 후보군(10개 이내)을 추린 뒤, ‘대학통합 공동추진위원회’ 심의를 거쳐 최종 후보군(4개)을 선정할 계획이다.

이후 양 대학 전체 구성원을 대상으로 한 투표를 통해 최종 1, 2순위 교명안을 결정하고, 이를 교육부에 제출하여 통합대학 교명 최종 확정 절차를 밟을 예정이다. 다만, 교육부 통합심의 과정에서 최종 교명은 변경될 수 있다.

국립순천대학교 이병운 총장은 “이번 교명 공모는 통합대학의 새로운 정체성과 철학을 사회적으로 공유하는 계기이자, 미래 비전과 정통성을 아우르는 상징 브랜드 구축의 출발점”이라며, “전남 국립의과대학 설립이라는 공동 목표를 위해 최종 통합승인까지 양 대학이 함께 모든 역량을 집중해 나가겠다”고 밝혔다.

SCNU and MNU Begin Official Process to Select the Name of Their Integrated University

- Naming contest to run from September 24 to October 10 in search of a name reflecting a new vision and identity

Sunchon National University (SCNU, President Lee Byung-woon) and Mokpo National University (MNU, President Song Ha-chul) have officially launched the process to select the name of their planned integrated university.

The two universities agreed on November 15, 2024, to pursue institutional integration and submitted an initial application to the Ministry of Education at the end of that year. In 2025, they plan to submit a revised application reflecting enhancements in key areas such as academic specialization and governance structure. Ahead of this, the universities agreed to select a new name that embodies the integrated university’s identity and future vision.

The first step of this process, a public naming contest, will be held for 17 days from September 24 to October 10. Open to both university members and the general public, the contest seeks a name that encapsulates the vision and values of the integrated university and reflects its role as a leading regional institution driving local development.

University members can participate through each school’s internal mobile platform, while the public can submit ideas via an online survey platform linked in announcements posted on both universities’ websites.

In parallel, external expert consultations will be conducted to gather a broad range of perspectives. All proposed names will undergo multiple rounds of review: first, the respective university naming committees will narrow submissions to a preliminary shortlist of up to ten candidates. Then, the Joint Committee for University Integration will further evaluate them to select a final shortlist of four names.

A university-wide vote across both institutions will then determine the top two preferred names, which will be submitted to the Ministry of Education for final approval. The ministry may, however, adjust the final name during its integration review process.

President Lee Byung-woon of SCNU stated, “This naming contest marks the beginning of building a symbolic brand that integrates the new identity and philosophy of the integrated university. It is also an opportunity to share our future vision with society. SCNU and MNU will continue to pool their resources and efforts to secure final government approval for integration and to achieve our shared goal of establishing a national medical school in Jeollanam-do.”
